John Cortines
Director of Grantmaking, Maclellan Foundation
Course Description
This course begins by exploring a prominent example of Christian philanthropy, prompting reflection on why generosity is such a vital and widely embraced aspect of the Christian faith. Central to the curriculum is an in-depth engagement with 2 Corinthians 8–9, the longest continuous biblical passage on generosity, which offers foundational principles for philanthropic practice: the power of story, a gracious ask, trustworthy methods, preparation and planning, and a celebration of generosity. The course also examines the theology of giving as articulated in 2 Corinthians 8:9, emphasizing how Christ’s example—becoming poor to enrich others—informs Christian perspectives on wealth and sacrifice. Students will consider how Christian theology portrays God as inherently generous, having created humanity in His image, and how giving becomes a pathway to human fulfillment and spiritual vitality. Furthermore, the course investigates the purpose-driven nature of generosity, rooted in Scripture’s vision to redeem and bless all people. Finally, it affirms the biblical teaching that God is worthy of our wealth, framing acts of giving not merely as transactions with others, but as offerings that honor and glorify God.
